Wash your truck - the West Country way

Post #1 by RichardJW~ » Mon Jan 05, 2009 10:06 pm

So first up we have this guy who pulled in tight to the wall on Aveton-Gifford bridge ('94), nudged the wall which then collapsed and the truck went in the drink.....along with a few calor bottles

Then there was this crane that slipped off the quayside here in Salcombe ('93) - seems it was something to do with him not waiting to build up air-pressure before moving it, anyway in it went

Yes, seems that way, Nick

The Seddon went in the water one afternoon when I was working in a dealership literally 100ft away from where it happened, we heard this loud thud and ran out to see what had happened. Thing is the bridge is narrow and there were/are frequent comings together along that bit of road - its the main Kingsbrisge to Plymouth road too!!!

Hi Richard,

Do you have any pics of the Seddon Atki being recovered?

Or do you know who recovered it and what gear they used?

Cheers

Mark

Sorry Mark, no pics of the recovery, in fact I am not sure exactly how they did it, it happened about 4pm one afternoon, by the time the emergency services arrived, closed the road etc. was 6pm & I was out the door.

I was there before them, when it was Avon Bridge Machinery, started in Jan. 92 and left in Dec. '95.
Was a good way to travel all over Devon and Cornwall repairing Case IH tractors and Welger balers - plus an assortment of other machinery.....in the firm's Peugeot 305 van dragging its ass loaded down with tools

I think CRMS took on in the late '90s.....they closed the place down & moved the business up to heathfield, then they went pear-shaped. Some bloke who does fabrication for barns & sheds is in the premises now

In winter it was a cold damp old shop, it is actually below the level of the River Avon, we never had the water in but it was close a couple of times.

My old 2.8 Capri used to love that hill, the Janspeed exhausts used to rattle out a fair bark climbing up there.....its all flippin' 40 zones there now
