Memories awakened.

Post #1 by FOWLER MAN » Sat Jul 21, 2012 12:27 am

Hi All,
I was surfing the net looking at old pics of Aberdare, (a town about eight miles from home).
I stumbled on a couple of pics.of a 19RB face shovel loading tippers.

The pics were taken late 1950s, but I believe the 19 RB was one of three Rustons which belonged to Joseph Davies Ltd.,they were still going strong when I was looking after their fleet in the 1970s.

I started my own contracting business in 1975, but have no pics. from the early days.
I was over the moon when I found a pic. of a site in Cwmbach, Aberdare where I did the groundworks for 54 flats for "Gee Walker & Slater" in 1978. The pic. is poor quality but it's the only one I have of my 1977 Hymac 580C

It's amazing what you find on the net.

Hello Again,
It was Easter Monday 1969, I worked then for The Cardiff Plant Group (DMD). They were doing The Flood Prevention Scheme at Bath at the time, and I was standby emergency fitter.

I had already been to The Imperial Smelting Works at Avonmouth to weld a split hydraulic pipe on an Allis Chalmers TL20 shovel. When I arrived back in Cardiff I was greeted By Andy Burns The Yard Manager. "Come on Fred were going to Bath," he said, and we set off at break-neck speed in his Morris 1000 van. :dizzy:

Arriving in Bath we found that the NCK305 in the picture below had slipped its moorings, swung out into the river and was straining at its one remaining mooring rope, jib at the ready, about to charge downstream into the historic Putney Bridge.

It had been moored to the opposite bank to the one shown in the pic. and we were able to drive to the rivers edge.
Fortunately there was a drag rope on the NCK so I was able to row out with a rope, carefully slew the machine around and attatch the rope to the drag rope.
Andy then attatched the other end to a spring-hanger on the Morris 1000, pulled out the drag rope and secured it to a convenient anchorage.
I was then able to winch the machine in under its own power and we made it secure.

These days I would not have been allowed to touch it without an opperators ticket. Crazy :!: :!: :!:

Some more pics. of the job, it's amazing whats out there on the net.
