Heres an old Liebherr 900 rubber duck. This machine is pre-litronic era but appears to be in good condition, how long that will last I dont know because the waste transfer site that its operating on has already gone through a Poclain 90 and two Daewoo machines.

while i was with d morgan we had a few liebherrr 901's with varying results, i remeber our first rubber duck took a brave man to handle it because it had no outriggers! the only aid to stability was the ability to lock the dampers on the axles hydraulically. at least the next one to arrive had a dozer blade to rest on.

I learned to drive in an old 805B that was knocking around, only used it for loading dumpers etc in the compound. We also had a 1987 902 rubber duck, driver let me loose in it one day, was interesting to say the least! Lack of slew brake meant a 180 turn resulted in a virtual 360 turn til I got the hang of it!

It was fitted with a blade on the rear, but the driver didnt use it, stability wasnt too bad on the road, but we had a section of sewer to lay through a field. Was extremely wet, and ground turned to clay about a metre down. With a large bucket on (putting in 525mm dia pipes), and placing spoil alongside trench, she tipped at full reach with a full bucket, righting herself as bucket emptied. Looked a bit hairy to me!

The driver later moved onto a A912, someone else took over the 902. When asked if the bigger machine was much different he said "Not really, but it falls over a lot easier!" This was a loan machine initially as Liebherr gave a long lead time for machine, so provided a 2nd hand machine to prevent losing the order. It was fitted with 2 stabilisers at one end,new machine when it arrived had stabilisers at front and rear blade so proved to be far more stable.

This R900B is a 2000 model, still fairly square........
