Rope Operated Excavators

Post #1 by XS650 » Thu Oct 23, 2008 10:27 am

Recently had pleasure of watching a Smith rope operated face shovel at work at Scorton Vintage Machinery show. Togerther with an old D6,Foden dump truck and MF track loader .First time I've seen a rope operated shovel working and was surprised how much use was made of the cog that shortens and lengthens the digging arm.
RB 22 is from previous year.

Great pictures, Craig. Is that the Scorton in North Yorkshire or Lancashire ? Looks like a good show.

Scorton North Yorks, near Catterick. The North Yorkshire Vintage Machinery club have a big show their every September, good spread of old tractors, lorries and cars and because its next to quarry they always have a working excavator show.Takes a good few hours to walk round it all, they seem to do it more for themselves so don't advertise it much and its refreshingly free of burger and tat stalls.

Smith Rodley, nice to see at least some of their equipment is out there still, and in very good condition as well.

They broke into the hydraulic excavator market with an H12 and H14 hydraulic excavators - H14 is a 9-10ton machine. Not sure just how popular those machines were, nor am I aware of any other hydraulic crawler machines they could have built.

Does anyone know what model the rope shovel pictured is? They built quite a few, the largest & last being the Smith 40. Last time I saw a brochure for that machine, it sold for more than £60.
Look out that window, Eden isn't burning. Its burnt.
