Couldn't resist another project then?
Sleeve bearing turbos are pretty easy to strip down and rebuild, just make sure that you take lots of pics as you go tearing it down to get the sequence the core goes back together. Chances are the exhaust wheel will one with the shaft and the compressor wheel will be secured with a multi-point nut on the threaded other end. Check carefully whether it is a right or left handed thread, and that if you have a low rating (often no more than 5 to 8Nm) torque wrench that can work with a left handed thread, I learnt the hard way that mine didn't and snapped the thread off the shaft of the turbo from my Range Rover necessitating a new shaft complete with exhaust wheel. Before removing the compressor wheel record (paint blob that you can remove once reassembled or marker pen) how it was aligned with the shaft as it's a good idea to put it back on the way it came off incase the whole rotating assembly was balanced together. I used assembly lube when putting mine back together and put some in the oil way too, just to ensure there was lube there on first start up as the oil is unlikely to get to it for a few seconds!
Also work checking the temperature rating of your copper slip because it gets pretty hot around the manifold to turbo exhaust housing

Yes Tim things are getting a bit daft now project wise but it keeps me out of trouble. I always take lots of photos but today's little escapade did not go to plan. This machine has stood in the open for some time and everything is blind tight; as the exhaust portion of the turbo came away it cracked the main housing which I blame myself for not being careful enough, I never learn!
Oh well let's see if I can locate another housing, had the thing come apart easily it would have been an easy job; oh well that's another lesson learnt, but should I ever have the need to do another turbo, I will know how to better tackle the job. I took the trouble to put all the innards back on the main shaft in the order they came off so I know exactly how everything goes back together.

Hum, I'd be tempted to seek out a complete turbo as this one looks to have had quite a life!

Tim, the core did freely spin it was just passing some oil and there was a bit of play in the bearing, you may be right about getting a complete turbo, I was hoping to save some money by repairing the old one as I wonder if the engine is much better than the turbo I took off it, I don't at this time wish to go down the road of a full engine rebuilt or second hand lump (assuming I can find one) unless that is absolutely necessary.

As you mentioned needing another housing it's probably just as easy to find a complete second turbo for sensible money. What make and model is it?

The turbo is a Holset 3LD its fitted to a Perkins T6,354 engine, you may be correct, that could well be the best way forward.

Looks like the 3LE might be an interchangeable unit, but so far all I can find are complete new units in the US which are big money landed
