Hi! I´m from sweden so excuse for my bad english. For a couple of weeks i became an owner of a Hymac 580 B Year 1968. Because I'm quite new to excavators there was many things i forgot to check before i bought the machine. I guess the shiny outside fooled me a bit

The first thing i had to do was to replace a very worn bushing on the tilt cylinder

I also realized that the brakes on the tracks was very bad. I opened the cover plates on the side and this is what i found.

I had to clean up and manufacture new part. I first tried to get them welded, but cast steel is very hard to weld so i hade to make new parts instead.

Another thing that made me wonder was the tracks. Sometimes i hear some strange sounds coming from the tracks or the transmission?
Some banging sounds. For example if i make a narrow turn and then drives away i sometimes hear this strange noice making the whole machine shake. Can it be the track being to lose in the tension making them close to pluck of? or is they to worn?

I opened the cover over the drivechains and find them to be very slack. Can this be the cause to the banging sounds? New chains are on the way from England.

Another strange thing that caught my eyes was that the axis on the big sprucket seemed to be wear against the hole in the cover plate. This making me suspect bad berings on the driveshaft. Anyone experienced the same? Is the bearings hard to replace?

Hi Andy and welcome to CMN that is a lovely looking 580B that you have got there; she is 1968 one year older than my 580BT. Looking at your photos you may need to adjust the brake that you repaired; I will attach a photo as I recently rebuilt the one brake cylinder on my machine and had to set up the adjustment. To correctly adjust the brakes you need to turn the adjuster until it physically moves the piston out of the brake cylinder, the measurement is 57mm from the face of the cylinder to the centre of the pin (you may not be able to read the steel rule on my photo)

Before you check anything else on the undercarriage drive, make sure that the machine is on level ground, then remove the side panel behind the cab and look underneath the three pick up pipes to the hydraulic pumps, there should be a bleed valve there, open this with the engine switched off and let the air escape, when hydraulic oil comes through close the bleed valve, try your machine again and see if you still have the problem? If hydraulic oil does not come through firstly check that the bleed valve is not blocked by any muck, then check that you have enough oil in the system, let us know how you get on.

Hi! And thanx for the advices! I really appreciate it I will try to adjust the brakes correctly. Is this the side panel for the bleed valve?

"try your machine again and see if you still have the problem?" I'm not sure which of my problems you are referring to. Is it the brake problems or the strange sound from the undercarriage?
I also feel the cylinder to the stick is a little slow. What can be the cause of this problem?
