The last two weeks have been paybacktime for my Hymac. I have been digging for Earth heat at my parents house. Except for an exploded hydraulic house for bucket ram, my excavator has served me well. Amazed what an old excavator is capable of doing :)

Remind what the pedals are operating?
Is that a Same or Fiat tractor? And another question what is mounted on the trailer drawbar? Thanks

The pedals have two functions depending on the position of the solenoid valve. In this video i used it for the extra boost on the dipper to speed up the dipper arm when digging. The dipper has the biggest ram and can otherwise be a little slow on this old Hymac
If i am ditching i can use the pedals to control the tilt bucket :)

On the trailer drawbar is mounted a hydraulic powerpack. Built by me from a wood splitter and a new petrol engine. The reason we did this is because the oil tank on the tractor is to small.

The 4wd tractor in the film is an Universal 640 Bamse and it is pretty much a Rumanian made Fiat :)

Andy it's great to see you getting some use out of your machine after all the work that you have done on her  this proves there is nothing wrong with using an old machine it will do the job at a fraction of the cost of a new one so long as you are able to carry out any repair work that maybe required. :brravo:

Hi Again! Been some time since i posted here. After the earth heat project, Diana that i named her has spent a pretty calm being with only some lighter ditching now and then.
Last weekend i had my sister for visit. She has a 3 year old son who is addicted to excavators. Wonder why
Of course i had to let him join me for a test start of Diana after a mounth of resting.
In Sweden it is the rain season now, it's been raining quite much the last weeks.
I know by experience that rain sometimes can tend to whirl in and fill up the air filter cup.
But somehow i forgot to check it before start
The engine started up for maybe two second and died. I tried the starter again, but the engine seemed to be stuck. Opened the engine cap and saw the water that had splashed out from the air filter. My engine was hydrolocked. After hearing some stories of another Hymac with broken crank caused by this i saw the worst case scenario before me :(

So i toke down the air filter and cleaned it. I removed the valve cover so i could remove the injectors. I pulled the starter and water was splashing out. It was more water than can be seen in the film cause i started to record after a few seconds.
I assembled the injectors and pulled the starter. It fired up almust instantly.
I had her going for nearly an hour and she seems back to normal again. But this must never happen again. Next time i might not be this lucky :o :wtf:

Is this a comon problem on Hymac? I allways keep the engine cover closed, but water comes in anyway. Maybe Jeremy or another Hymac specialist know?

A 'close call ' there Andy :o I have never heard of this happening before specially as you have an engine cover; my advice would be to cover your bonnet with a tarpaulin sheet of good quality to try and protect from this happening again. Water locking an engine can also bend the connecting rods in the engine, so long as your engine runs okay you may well have got away without causing any serious harm.

As a matter of course I would drop the engine oil and change it along with the filter both of which will have been contaminated to some extent with water.

Im thinking of maybe mount a dry filter from the later 580C
If you get it touch with Tony, maybe you can ask him if he heard of any Hymac with hydrolock problems.
I know at least one in Sweden that had the same problem. It happened with his Hymac once after severe raining. But he was lucky, it was so much water that the engine did not crank at all. He drained it and it started.
A year later he sold it and the same thing happened to the new owner. He was not that lucky. The crank broke and the engine was destroyed..

I don't think you will find room for a 580C style air filter housing under the bonnet cover; some 580 machines had them mounted externally, usually those powered by air-cooled Dorman engines used by the MOD.
Out of interest did you have the correct level of engine oil in your air-filter housing?

I will speak with Tony Flint in the next day or so it will be interesting to hear if he has heard of this happening before?

Jeremy
