JCB 3C drops revs and wants to die.

Post #1 by mickdoc6238 » Wed Mar 02, 2016 11:34 pm

Hi
I have a 1979 JCB 3C and use it for light work around our Fields to dig the odd hole and lift a bit, but the last time I had it out the barn I notice it was struggling to make it up a slight incline around the house. The Rev's dropped and it kept wanting to die.
Then yesterday I took it out to dig a hole and it barely made it across the field with-out the rev's dropping and stopping. It did not want to rev.
When I started to dig the hole I had the same problem whiles digging and the Rev's dropped and kept cutting out.It started up but a few time struggled like it was out of fuel.I limped back into the barn and hoped it was nothing too serious.
Does anyone any idea what could be the problem.
Thanks for any help you could give
Mick

You need to clean all fuel lines and filters

yep that is what I would also check inside the fuel tank for stuff floating around if it was mine I would drain the whole fuel tank and wash it out as well
just to be sure

Mick welcome to CMN  As above and if that does not cure the problem then; check that you are not sucking air into the fuel line, check that the lift pump is working correctly and finally look at the fuel injection pump, there are other threads on this forum covering that. Hope that helps you.

Cheers Guys and thanks for your time on this.

I will clean the tank and fuel lines and if no cure look at the Injection pump.

Thanks again
Mick

Mick, don't forget to check the air filter I just re-read the posts and people have mentioned fuel and fuel filters but don't forget the air filter it can cause this type of problem.

Hi Mick,
If the air cleaner is at fault there will be black smoke from the exhaust.
Don't forget there's a brass gauze filter in the top of the lift pump.

Would this one have the gauze filter in the tank as well?
The other thing that comes to mind if it's not used a lot is 'diesel bug', but if you're giving the whole system a washout then that shouldn't be a problem.
If a LandRover doesn't leak oil, it's run out.

Don't forget the sediment/water trap mounted back near the bulkhead as well.

Thank you everyone who responded to my cry for help and I am pleased to say I have now fixed the problem which was a simply fix.

I took off the air filter and it was in a bad state so replaced it but although it needed changing did not solve the problem so I took off the fuel filter and there was the problem. At the bottom of the dish was a mixture of what I can only describe as a shitty mixture of gunk.

A new Fuel filter and a 5 min bleeding and the old girl fired up and was running at full rev's again.

Thanks again for your Help.
Mick
