Okay a bit more here; as mentioned above I suspected there was diesel in the engine oil so after repairing the right hand brake cylinder that had been leaking I took the rocker cover off the engine and started her up on tick over.
It did not take long to spot that diesel was leaking from the banjo on no1 cylinders fuel injector, you can just make out that it looked cleaner than the others. Removing it meant taking the rocker shaft off the engine; once that was done I removed the fuel rail and sure enough the end banjo was found to be slightly loose meaning that the soldered connection had failed. I took the banjo to work and bought some silver solder and flux which was expensive but as the name suggests it does contain silver!
I did not solder the banjo joint myself but we have an excellent welder who did the job for me; last Saturday I went back up to the machine and reassembled the engine, after torqueing the rocker shaft back down and setting the valve clearances I cracked her up and let her tick over, good result no more diesel leaking
I dropped the oil filter and have replaced that next time I go up I will drop the oil before running her again, that's another job sorted.
