Okay a bit more here; as mentioned above I suspected there was diesel in the engine oil so after repairing the right hand brake cylinder that had been leaking I took the rocker cover off the engine and started her up on tick over.
It did not take long to spot that diesel was leaking from the banjo on no1 cylinders fuel injector, you can just make out that it looked cleaner than the others. Removing it meant taking the rocker shaft off the engine; once that was done I removed the fuel rail and sure enough the end banjo was found to be slightly loose meaning that the soldered connection had failed. I took the banjo to work and bought some silver solder and flux which was expensive but as the name suggests it does contain silver!
I did not solder the banjo joint myself but we have an excellent welder who did the job for me; last Saturday I went back up to the machine and reassembled the engine, after torqueing the rocker shaft back down and setting the valve clearances I cracked her up and let her tick over, good result no more diesel leaking
I dropped the oil filter and have replaced that next time I go up I will drop the oil before running her again, that's another job sorted.

Re: Hymac 580BT 1969
Okay so once I started with the angle grinder and paint brush I got a bit carried away to be fair I was sick of seeing the rust on it, so the start of a major repaint has been carried out with the mechanical work put on a temporary hold.

Re: Hymac 580BT 1969
I really want a new cab fabricating for this machine and had not originally intended trying to patch the old one up anymore but with the rest of the upper works painted it started to look rather odd to say the least so 'bit the bullet' and started to patch up the cab
I used an angle grinder to fetch the rust off and get back to bare metal where possible and gave it an under coat of a decent primer there is still lots to do but I am feeling happier with the machine now; coincidently I purchased this machine two years ago now next Tuesday where has the time gone?
Oh well I make sure that every time I go up to see the digger I get at least one job done; unfortunately I don't have the time or money or commitment to be able to strip her all the way down which would be the best way of tackling the task, however this is my first attempt at a restoration of this scale and I can say that I have enjoyed every minute of what I have done so far.

Re: Hymac 580BT 1969
I paid a visit to my machine today for which I was fully intent on painting the small bit of the bottom of the boom; however I just could not stand the sight of the rust on the dipper cylinder anymore so after locating a pair of steps I set about removing the rust using an angle grinder and flap disc to take it back to the bare metal, that done I used the quality primer and after that was dry (it does dry quickly) I top coated it and that was that as they say day over and done.

What kind of paint did you use on it(suppliers etc)?
Norman it's a one pack high gloss paint that has been colour matched; the supplier is Cromadex Akzo-Nobel I do have the actual colour details if anybody needs it; the paint I used can be brushed on and it does generally give a good finish or it can be sprayed on, if you want a spray paint then you need to ask for it in a 222 FAD (fast air drying)
Jeremy
Forgot to say if you need any details of the primer I can supply that too it is also a one pack paint.
