JCB 3C 2 engine removal

Post #1 by keithhills » Sun Jun 13, 2010 12:26 pm

SILLY QUESTION PERHAPS, but does anyone know whether I can remove and replace the broken crankshaft in my JCB 3C Mk2 without removing the engine? Its the BMC Nuffield engine. Its not possible to move it to a workshop without power and steering so i was hoping to drop the crank out from the bottom.

Its highly unlikely that you will be able to do that, and that applies to most engines.
Your best hope is to either get the machine towed or winched to a better place of access and remove the engine completely.

I put a crankshaft in a Dodge removal lorry once - not the easiest thing i've ever done :dizzy:
Stripping the front out - timing etc was o.k it was supporting the rear as the mounts were on the bellhousing.
If the cab tilted i'd have taken it out

Steve

Got carted off to hospital doing it as well. When torquing up the main bearings make sure the socket stays on the bar and not on the bolt head -
DON'T look up just as it falls off straight onto your forehead - 3/4 drive 15/16 deep socket :dizzy: :dizzy: :dizzy:

I have never removed a crackshaft from an engine only replaced shells. That is not too bad from underneath but for your job it might be easier to hoist it out. You could swing it into the back of a van or 4x4.

Engine has to come out to replace crankshaft as if memory still ok flywheel housing has to be removed to release rear bearing cap. Not had one apart for over 25 years. :D
