Does anyone know what model the rope shovel pictured is? They built quite a few, the largest & last being the Smith 40. Last time I saw a brochure for that machine, it sold for more than £60.

It is a Smith E2800, actually a 28 but Smith renumbered some of their cranes in 1969.
I have a few photos from this machine and some others on my website http://www.smith-cranes.nl and I'm still searching for more photos. Image

It is a very interesting site indeed and well presented.

Never knew the Smith 40 had a dragshovel version either, that must have been one pretty awesome machine back in its time!

Do you know anything about the hydraulic excavators that Smith built? Basically hydraulic versions of the 12 and 14 cable machines, undercarriage and the bodywork/cab design were the same.

I'll keep an eye out and let you know if I see any Smith Rodley brochures around.

Look out that window, Eden isn't burning. Its burnt.

The only hydraulic machine I knew of is the H14. I do not think there is a hydraulic version of the 12, although I could not find it in my description of the history of the Smith excavators.
There was a Super-10 who was converted into a prototype hydraulic drags-hovel excavator; the result was the Smith H14.

Hello Fred.
The Smith H14 in the photo looks very similar in design to a Priestman beaver.

Think this is as good as any place for these....

Taken at Bleak House OCCS in late 90's, RB195's and a Marion 195 dragline.

Enjoy
