Loco in trouble

Post #1 by martyn williams » Sun May 29, 2011 8:53 pm

Found this on youtube. This loco was used on a test to see if it could pull the fuel tanker train to replace the ageing class 60 locomotives.
This loco developed an AWS fault, its a safety device that will stop the train if it goes past a red signal. This device decided to operate when every signal was green, bringing the 2500 tonne train to an abrupt halt. Two class 66 locomotives were sent out to take the train forward.I was on duty that day and called to it.Had the same fault on another loco last Thursday. Its caused by a faulty receiver that pick up what the next signal is therefore warns the driver.

Preserved Deltic diesel loco derails. These locos are a true classic machine, designed to travel at 100 mph on the East coast mainline in the 60's and 70's.
It can be very costly if you get a derailment on a preserved line without the lifting equipment let alone damage to loco and track.
These locos are 100 ton so you need good jacking equipment.
