The majority of the machines they had on the A46 were hired in. Stokey had a few bits of kit on there for them and part of the deal was they had to be signed up as John Jones machines, with the owner having to suffer the cost of taking all the livery off at the end of the job!

Hi,
Bit more John Jones history courtesy of Allan.
Fitting that the previous post was a lowloader as I'm told John Jones himself was a navvy driver who first set up business with a lowloader moving other peoples equipment.
The Company secured a contract circa 1972 muckshifting for the Shell Terminal on Anglesey but the bridge accross the Menai Strait from the North Wales mainland was not capable of carrying the required D9 and motor scrapers onto the island.
John Jones sourced some pontoons and floated the D9 and three 631 scrapers, (bought new for the job), across to the island.
This in spite of the fact that no insurance company was prepared to cover the crossing.

would they have used winches or boats to pull the pontoons across. I remember jj on Shrewsbury by pass in the early 90's. Doing the muck shift.

John Jones (Excavation) Limited has been reactivated and is 50% owned by Vinci Construction UK Limited (trading as Taylor Woodrow for civils work) and Vinci Terrassement SA, which I believe specialises in earthworks and civil engineering projects that are earthworks led.
