One memory. The A449 job was 24/7. If I delivered there I would stay overnight in the foreman's caravan. Sometimes I would do a night shift on a shovel, or something, just for beer money.

Often the scraper drivers were working double shifts. One night on a dark section, a scraper with a dozy driver ran over a fitter's van parked on the haul-road. It was completely flattened. The night foreman brought in a D8 dozer and they buried it.

To this day somewhere north of Newport, there is a yellow van full of tools buried beneath the dual carriageway.

The fitter thought it had been nicked.

Just remembered Larry Webb's unofficial slogan that was scratched in the paint on the front of my ERF cab.

Taking folks for a ride is good business, is it? Maybe for a bus company? Stitching people up in business might be clever, but it isn't 'good'.

I speak as one who has been 'taken for a ride' in business. Cost me all I had.

I believe he was pretty good on the cricket pitch when younger. I work for him at Stanford-le-hope Essex 1970/71. Then transferred to M3 Sunbury to Lightwater contract ,I was on lube truck with Jimmy Henderson, (ex Dick Hampton) The plant manager was Don Robson,again (ex Hampton). Foreman fitter was Jim Lee ,who I later worked with at W C French, Bristol Dock, Believe he worked for G L Plant )Gleeson) afterwards Does anyone know Jims whereabouts at present time? Great pictures, I used to love being on an 8 or a 9 with no cab, on the good days! I always liked a straight stack too but pay for it now with a constant hissing in my ears.

Hello mate. Worked for larry Webb on M 56 in 73. It was then Bovis who also bought A.E.Farr at about same time. They shifted the muck for Marples Ridgeway who was main contractor up to M6 interchange. Bob Littlechild and a bloke called Bickerstaffe were in charge and Terry Ryan was muckshifting foreman.
