Re: Dick Hampton
Hi Guys, Well, when I was a lad back in 1964, I was fascinated by trucks, and when Dick Hampton started working on the final section of the M74..me and my mates would go down after school and watch the machines at work, If my memory serves me right, the fleet consisted of C and D reg, Leyland/LAD Comets 6x4,Bedford TK's 4x2, Ford Thames Traders,4X2 And my favourite truck at that time, the Guy Warrior,6x4..What was unique about these Tippers was that all the trucks had Scow end Dump truck bodies with Cab protection and no tailgates, obviously for safety and fast dumping on the site, I think there were around 50 trucks in total. They also had 2-3 old Scammell Low loaders, and a couple of old Bedford fuel bowsers, The tractors were mainly Caterpillar D8's..most of the scrapers were pulled by the tractor..and I think there were a couple of Motor Scrapers too, he also had a couple of Ruston Bucyrus excavating cranes..not sure which models, and a couple of old Coaches used at various points for tea breaks etc..Their Workshop and Depot were only a Half a mile away from where i stayed at the time..in fact an old Scraper lies buried there on the now landscaped site...thats all for now, but more to come soon. cheers!!
