Restoration of a Mechanical Moke by Winget

Post #1 by XSFrank » Thu Jan 10, 2013 5:29 pm

Hi all,

Following on from my earlier post in the new members section ( viewtopic.php?f=24&t=7714 ) I thought I start my own thread.
My plan is to restore it and use it at Santa Pod and Avon Park as a pit truck when my mates and I take our Drag Beetles to the track. To tow the cars, haul tyres etc.
It’s sat in my workshop now and I’ll strip it down tonight. I got a couple of small metal repairs to do and then the frame and most parts will go to be shot blasted and powder coated.
I will do it in Heritage/Leaf Green (RAL6002) which seems a close colour to the original.
The pick up bed will be new stained timber boards.

I also realise the tank is not original, any pictures of a proper one would be great, maybe someone got one, even a rusty one to take the measurements from for a repo. Tank straps shouldn’t be a problem.
The air filter is totally rusted out, I’ll look for a replacement or maybe a nice chrome filter of a triple Stromberg 97 carb set up ;)

Cheers Frank
I managed to find a PDF copy of an original instructions manual and spare parts list for the JAP 4/3 engine.
Sometimes Google is wonderful :claphands: I found a guy on a stationary engine forum who's got a complete engine, so may look into that for some spares. Also found a tool company in Lincs who stil have some genuine parts like the cooling shroud for sale.

I'll be back in my workshop tomorrow night to carry on with stripping it down.
For now I'll concentrate on the body and chassis to get it rolling again asap.

Attached are a couple of pictures of how it looked when I picked it up and the green one is a version with a tipper bed attached.

Thanks John

That's great. I might keep my eyes open and see if I can get hold of a copy. Would be nice to have with the documents for the moke.

 Hi Craig, yes its a Winget GF Dumper, saying Winget have the sole marketing rights. The British Construction Machinery books ar superb, i have collected a fair few through the years, i would say they are pretty rare.

I've made some progress on the moke and finished the metal work to the carriage platform and one of the disc wheels.
Although I want to keep as much original metal as possible and think a little rough looking adds to the character, part of the frame was too rusty, so I cut it out and welded new angles to it. Also made new lifting eyes which were missing completely and tabs to fit side panels in.

The wheel was a bit more work and I had to cut out one side and make a new disc. I think the result is quite good. Now to the other side.
I've also made new rollers to fit in the main frame which the engine swivels on. The old rollers had seized and were just flat on one side.

Well it's been a while and the project stalled for quite some time. Setting up my own business and some work at home didn't leave me with lots of spare time.
But yes I have progressed and all parts are now nicely powdercoated and the reassembly has begun.

The engine is still part disassembled and will be put back together next with a little rebuild, new gaskets etc.
I bought another engine on fleabay for the magneto, tank and valve cover.
Really looking forward to getting it done and having a ridearound.

Well I've finally completed it and have to say, I'm quite pleased with it :)
