Post #1 by martyn williams » Thu Feb 21, 2008 9:53 pm

Just got myself a small sand blaster off Ebay. Coupled it up to my Hydrovane and tested it on one of my projects.Seems to work fine.
I am also looking at another machine to join the others. Its a dozer.Waiting to get time off to go and see it.

Hello martyn

I need to buy/hire a sand blaster for my JCB 3C restoration project.

What site unti do you have and how much sand does it take to blast a typical wheeled excavator?

Cheers

Hello Philip
It cost £60 new off Ebay its a 10 Gallon blaster, uses kiln dried sand, air pressure 100 psi 40cfm. Uses around 250kg of sand per hour.Had to modify the end as ceramic nozzle too small for the job.Used 3/8 bsp steel pipe connection and it works fine.My hydrovane is rated at 75 cfm but the compressor is over 30 years old so would be down on output.
I would use a air sander and a blaster for the type of job you have got.It used to take me around three days to do a JCB from start to finnish.Preparation is to key to a good job.I have also done a job using nitromors and a sander with good results.
Don my BTD6 using this method.Much harder to do a tracked loader than a JCB

I like the 'before' picture, Martyn. I used to drive one of these. It was fantastic in terms of power loading compacted soil from a heap. Only problem was getting on and off between loads (I was working alone). Brings back some pleasant memories though !

It is similar to the one I have. They are not bad for the price,as long as you can get hold of good sand or shot. I have used Nitromores for thick paint.A bit expensive but does the job and a lot quieter

I know for one but it needs a lot of money thrown at it to get it right.
Cheers
