hello
l have an old rh4 that l use for odd jobs around the place, old machine but works ok when it works,
always seems to have a problem with fuel filters blocking up and stopping the engine, the tank is so full of muck l think l need a shovel to clean it out, was going to do this the other day but when l looked at it the tank is part of the structure and is welded in why would you make a tank that you cant remove and steam clean out, surely the manafacturer must know that it will get full of crap and need cleaning out out some point in its life ?
anyway thats a job for another day a sunny one preferably, but for now l have just made a remote tank thal will mount on the rh4 above the standard one and plumb it straight to the fuel pump throught a filter of course
found a lpg tank that came in the back of a range rover l bought once in the barn that fitted the bill nicely and as it was unused it was squeaky clean inside

made a couple of feet for it so as l could pick up with a couple of exsisting bolts on the top of the old tank,
made one end 2" taller on purpose so as l could have an outlet at each end on teh bottom, the lower one as a drain for water and the higher one as the fuel out to the pump
on top was a plate with 5 fittings which all unscrewed, welded up the 2 holes l dident want, converted one of the old pipe conections to a filler plug,

there was a neat little gas/fuel level gague that was all mechanical brass float turning a brass cog that turns a needle in the gauge, will reuse that l guess it will work in diesel as well as liquid gas

Neat modification Some designers do a good job but don't take into account the practicalities of site work and the very good chance that there will be an ingress of crap .
The Ford 550 and MF 50B tanks were hard to clean out Just shoved a steam lance in the filler and flushed it. Took a while but worked in the end.

Looks like you've got it cracked okay to me Andy Perhaps when you have some spare time you can get the machine to where you can clean the old tank out properly there must be someway of draining it?

Re: remote fuel tank
Neat job there!!
We just strapped on a 45 gal. drum with a couple of lengths of nylon pipe for feed and return and a breather stuck into it as a temporary fix.
It does make you wonder why tanks are designed with no cleaning access.
I've had to cut a hole in more than one tank over the years, and fit a bolt on cover for future access.
Most tanks are too thin to drill and tap but if you drill the tank, weld captive bolts to a strip and push them out from inside the tank you can bolt on a plate and gasket without actualy having to weld on the tank itself. This is a bit of a potch , but worth doing if the tank can't be removed.
The tank and gasket are sandwiched between the inside strip and cover plate making a secure joint.

Re: remote fuel tank
hi chaps
crazy isent it, the designer must know someone will need to clean the tank out at some time or other, the only way in is the filler pipe, maybe 2.5" in diameter just hopeless, was looking at my 6" holesaw and my battery drill earlier might have to make my own way in lol
