CMN is running out of diskspace!

Hi all!

I started this forum on a small server (shared hosting, only 1GB, also hosting several other domains owned by me) because I wanted to check about the feedback first.
Now, as CMN is running very well, and we have loads of GREAT photo-material we are getting short on diskspace.
It is NOT a solution to move the photos to image-hosting services. They are not reliable and we will get big holes in the posts after some time.

So, what can we do?
I would love to move the forum to a root-server, like I did with maskinisten.net.
But that is rather expensive.
A decent server costs at least 500 Euro every year, server only, no support.

There are several ways to help us:
- click the Google-ads at the bottom of the pages
- donate a small amount of money

Another possibility is that we create a members area which only paying members can access.

Further solution could be to have a sponsor, showing ads.
If you know any potential sponsor, dont hesitate to mention the page and that we can sell ad-space.

Hi i remember this disc place problem on another site...what you should do is....get everyone to host there own pictures via photobucket,flicker...ect... and just link the pictures and it does not use your space..

As I wrote: that is NOT the solution, as we will get big holes (missing files) in the posts soon if we do that.
Those image-services are not that reliable.

Can CMN put the pictures on a separate space on the server you have for Maskinisten?
It would be like an image-hosting service but:
1. You would have control over it and can prevent images from being deleted.
2. Of course the user interfaces should look the same, ie you have to code some of the functions to work "in behind" the way they should.

How about buying a larger disk? How many GB have your computer? I have 230 GB on my largest HDD. Today we can buy a 500 GB HDD or even a 1000 GB.
It must be cheaper than move it to a Root-server or am I wrong? Sure we should donate money to such one. Or can you use a large USB memory at 1-2 GB? You chould redirect all photos to a USB linked to this site.
But is your PC the nevest or next nevest or a old one? For fast acess through a USB you may have at least a 2 year old PC as has the nevest version 2.0 for USB.

LG, it is not Holgers PC. It is a server at a webhotell where Holger rents a limited capacity (disk space, traffic per month etc). I guess that Holger haven´t even seen the server in real life.

I must echo Nicks feelings here, I would also be prepared to make a donation to help CMN expand.
I know that the German site LKW Stefan, requests donations to support that site, and if any of you on CMN have been on that site I can tell you it has a huge picture archive.
I must confess that I rarely click on the adverts trouble is I have such a busy life style my time is too precious to waste on adverts, however for those of us who perhaps dont mind viewing them I suppose this helps.
I await your ultimate decision I do believe that if everbody made a small contribution it could help our site progress, Im a great believer in sharing and Im very pleased with the picture and information content that users are posting. Its also great to share a common interest with other people with who you would normally have no contact with.
Thanks for setting the site up Holger lets hope we all go from strength to strength.

i must agree with the other posts here, i have no problem making a donation, the community that is building here is friendly informative and humourus (any one got an on line dictionary???) its nice not to have a site where there is back biting and bitching going on, congratulations Hagar (sorry poor attempt at a joke!), Holger & Nick, keep up the good work!
