Fodens in South Wales

[FOWLER MAN]

Hello,

My good friends the late Mr. Edgar Pile and his son Brian ran six Fodens in the 1960's
Five of them were powered by Cummins 250 units and one by Fodens own 2stroke engine.
Brian gave me these photos to post.
They were taken at Larry Ryan's coal reclamation plant at the old Geoesfaen Colliery site
in the mid 60's.
There are some of Ryans 22RB's and a 38 RB in the photos. too. The Leyland Comet
tipper belonged to Jack O'Connel of Porthcawl.

When I first saw that first photo I did not read the caption.it sent a shiver down my spine.The reason,it reminded me of Aberfan OCT 1966.I will never forget that day as long as I live.
I was in school on that Friday morning in Mountain Ash.The news filtered through of the disaster.My father left work in the local Co-op.He and a few mates got a few shovels and headed to the village in the next valley.I can remember begging him not to go,I was frightened that he might get killed by a further tip slide.
Funny how memories come drifting back.

Hello Fred
It united everyone in the valleys and beyond.Its just a shame that closeness has gone in the UK.Everyone pulling together,you will know what I mean.It took so long to resolve the issues regarding the tip removal.Using the money donated by the good people around the world to pay for the tips to be removed.Totally disgusting.At least the Labour government got that money repaid.
Still get a chill when I drive on the A470 past that point.
Keep posting the photos Hope to meet you in the very near future.Was at Cossletts in Cilfynydd yesterday.

And hope that the sad lesson of that man made disaster is not ignored like has happened with other things from the past like economic problems. Too many people have a short memory and it is worth rembering these things, as painfull as it can be for people directly involved so that it is not forgotten and repeated.

History repeats itself too often, as memories get shorter and lost in change.
