Re: Whats this bit of history ????
Last one obviously has tank/bren type suspension. Did Loyd not have this set up?

Its a ' Shervick' made by Vickers for the Ground Nut Scheme and reportedly useless compared to the CAT's
In the third pic you can just make this name out on side of hood.

Re: Whats this bit of history ????
Hello all,
Thanks for the replies, and yes, it does look a bit Russian.
You are right Craig it is a SHERVICK, built by Vickers using reclaimed Sherman tank components.
They were not a converted tank as such but built as a tractor from the ground up. they were powered by a single GM 6/71 engine whereas I bileive the tank had two.
Some 400 were built circa 1948/9 and many were sent to Africa to the illfated Ground Nut Scheme, where as you say, they proved to be less than reliable.
The one in the Photographs however, is seen working in Holland.
Vickers started the development of the VR180 in 1950 but they didn't appear on the market till March 1952.

Hi, FowlerMan.
Int'restin'. It's been quite a while since I heard or saw anything on this post-WW2 failure. Here is a photo of a Shervick and another of a Morpac rock drill based on a Sherman Tank.
Thanks for the photos and the information.

Re: Whats this bit of history ????
There were some Sherman conversions built by Letourneau. First is a simple crane-magnet setup for scrap yard use at his steel mill. Probably to avoid punctured tires.
And this one was called Tree-Crusher-Tender I believe. They used its dozer blade and powerful winch to recover bogged Junglecrushers in swampy terrain.
The last one is not based on a Sherman, maybe it was a Highspeedtractor, but this cable-backhoe-thing sure looks impressive!
Cheers, Max
