Good one Martyn, the video brings back the memory of the boredom of that kind of operation. Operated DW20's, 21's, TS24's and what we called six wheel Eucs, for S.J. Groves in 1958 and 1960 over 40 scrapers on the two jobs, two 12 hour shifts/day 8 hour shifts Sat and Sunday. Groves at that time one largest dirt contractors in USA. Even then as a young guy can remember going round and round on same haul day after day. Lots of stick shift machines then, TS24 luxury with power shift, ah but we were out in fresh air smelling nothing but dust and diesel smoke. Hehe

Yes Martyn you could say they had a bark to them, maybe that contributed to the ringing ears today. As I recall rear engines were Detroit 6-71 with short bent pipe off exhaust manifold no muffler, front engine think was 6-110 Detroit muffled of course.
Being an IH fan you this might interest you. On that job, Ohare Field Chicago located not far from IH factory were 6, believe they were prototype, 295 IH scrapers. Reason say think were prototype is because of the gauges and other equipment hanging different places on machines and fact that at beginning of night shift used to see many observers from IH inspecting machines. Were cable operated scrapers, also one 495 six wheel scraper appeared, same scraper as 295 can't remember if it was hydraulic or cable. Can't remember how long it stayed on job. Another orphan appeared for a while, a 460 Allis Chalmers again can't remember how long it stayed.
Funny how lots of memories come back when thinking about this. All sorts of insignificant recollections that don't really mean anything except to those that experienced them.

In this dvd of IH equipment it shows I H scrapers under test.The DVD shows a lot more detail ,the IH sales department had fillmed the scrapers on test to evaluate them.The film marked not for general public viewing.

The Payhauler truck was kind of a special application hauler. Never saw the job but had heard stories of large fleet of them on the TomBigbee Waterway in southern US. The Hough 400 Loader was a tough machine. Was one of first "large" 10 yard front end loader, lots of them used in contour coal strip operations in Eastern US coal fields before mountain top striping, and road construction rock jobs. Then history repeated itself and Cat discovered the "large" loader market and came with 992 and the rest is history. An interesting IH video thanks for posting.
