Hi, Bear.
Thank you for your kind comments. It was a time in my working life that I am very pleased I got to experience 'cos it is now GONE from the contracting scene, quite possibly forever.

Here is an article on the use of chaining in restoring wildlife habitat in Utah.

http://wildlife.utah.gov/news/07-10/wil ... rsheds.php

And a report on clearing methods as used in DowNunder. (They give the costs in Aus. pounds and U.S. $ so I suspect that the cost chart may be somewhat out of date. LOL. We haven't had currency in pounds since February, 1966.)

Happy reading.

Hi, Folks.
Here is a bit more on clearing with dozers and a chain. See the section at the bottom of this page for some rather complicated ideas on what is basically a simple process. Trust bureaucrats to stuff it up.

http://www.fao.org/DOCREP/006/AD083E/AD083e04.htm

This link has some more realistic information, except that I never managed to pull any drawbars off any Cat dozers that I chained with. (The Vanatta site also has a LOT of other information on it and is well and truly worth a good look around.)

http://www.vannattabros.com/dozer14.html

Here is a catalogue from a more or less local company showing some of their dozer canopy and blade and rake options.

http://www.gessner.com.au/catalogue/page_93-100.pdf

These people have worn their thinking for at least a few minutes since they've been in business.

Hi Deas,I just found this thread and it's abit different to what we do over here.If a couple of D8's and a length of chain went walkabout here in the UK,They'd be finished by dinnertime! :D You have one huge country to play in

Hi, D4C24A.
You KNOW this has to be a query from DowNunder.

'Pikey' camp???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Hi, Nicky.
Yeah, I guess there is a bit of difference twixt our two countries. F'wunthing, we can spit on the ground most places without creating a major bog hole.

We kin also go somewhat more than 4 miles outside our own home town and still make ourselves understood. LOL.

N'I'kin ackshully stretch my arms out to BOTH sides an' not gouge somebody's eye out.

Now would I be correct in guessing that there are a couple of places over your way where you would like to try running 2 x D8's and 600 feet of 2 1/2" chain - not necessarily in amongst trees either? Even if it was only until smoko?

ONLY(?) joking.

Hi Deas and D4,Pikey is a word for Gypsy,Gypo, etc. The term 'traveller' is the politically correct version in the UK.They tend to be theiving, scum, animals, and generally filthy rip off merchants.I do know a few deacent ones but there's not many about.
As for land clearing with a chain some less than desireable areas Deas,I better not say as our country is tiny compared to yours and there maybe members on this board who may be offended

Nicky i believe the politically correct term for them is
Caravan
Utilising
Nomadic
Travellers
there is a shorter name for a group of them but it escapes me at the moment
