CATERPILLAR D10 AT WORK

Post #1 by martyn williams » Sun Oct 21, 2007 12:22 pm

Sprocket was kind enough to take me to visit KJ Services on Saturday.I was impressed with the machinery they had, also a very large stock of CAT engines.I will be arranging a visit to this depot early Spring with ACMOC chapter 2.If you are interested I am sure you could join our group. There is a very large open cast just been started nearby but I have also arranged a site visit to Parcslip near Bridgend South Wales.
Will give more detail in coming months.

Hello Roly
Great pictures, have heard that Caterpillar are to discontinue with "high drive" and go back to the old style. The D9,D10 allways looks to have a high center of gravity to me. I have been trying to find the photo of a D9R nearly on its side a few years ago.It was a Blackwell machine on Nutalls site.Found some photos but need to scan them.
What would you say are the good points and bad points between the track arrangements?
Cheers
Martyn

Martyn, the goodpoint about the old style track are there cheaper to buy
and maybe last a bit longer, the down side is replacing wear strips and setting up
front idler, remove roller frame to get at final drive, pulling sprocket, removing
case,changing gears,then if top pinions gone,remove rops cab,diesel tank,
steering clutches, then you darent leave the cross shaft bearings, the bad
points on a hi-track? none , easier to work on,no shimming of idlers,no cross
shaft or hassle of final drive failing or leaking dou-cones, a well balanced all
round tractor, expensive but needs less maintence, neil becher runs 2 D10s
i took some photos when i last visited his site.

Roly fantastic pictures! the noise of a D9, D10 and twin engined scraper all throttling up at the same time must be immense!!

you didnt say, was that your D10 & what became of it? or did you have it on cross hire from another outfit ?
cheers Simon

Graham sorry i missed your post,and simon,no i did,nt own the machine
but it was subject to a cross hire when you should,nt re-hire as the
sub contractor, very political on government contracts in the 1970s.

Hi Roly, would I be right in thinking that was an 84W D10? Back in 1990 i Had the chance of pushing 631 and 637C scrapers with one of these tractors.I had a D8+box on hire to Crouch Mining at Libry Moor occs and kept on at the 10 driver for a go at the scrapers with it.WOW.Just for the crack you could load them in 2nd and finish them off in 3rd.(not something I condone)What a beast>I will post pics one day.It belonged to RJ levack ltd.
Just one point I would like to make after seeing Bechers 657s again,I have seen alot of small to very big kit in my time but nothing, nothing impressed me like the first time I saw His 657s at Rough Hill occs back in the early 1990s.Its the most spectacular form of high speed muckshiftng I have EVER seen.
