Hello there Richard,

The track pads are roughly 85% worn, the bushes (which have been turned) are around 88% worn on the reverse side and 72% on the forward drive side, there are a couple of good 85%+ rollers underneath, but she is destined for Opencast in Ayrshire, we don't want to be going near the undercarriage fro the next 12 months at least so have decided to throw a complete undercarriage at it. If it wasn't going to a good contract we would have carried on with the current under carriage for another 750 - 1000 hours.

Are those old parts sent for scrap or are any remanufactured at all?

All the undercarriage thats been fitted is new genuine Cat, the plan is to weld up a couple of the idlers and keep as spare along with a couple of the better single flange rollers, the segments will be kept in case we need to run a track to destruction (about 75-80% remaing on the segments), tracks and everything else will be in the bin.

The new undercarriage is starting to take shape, couple of pics of the carrier rollers fitted, along with the idler guards, these are designed to stop debris getting trapped between idler and frame and also material dropping down onto the rollers.

The tractor was to be rolling out on Monday, but there is a delay in the metal for skinning the blade, so Wednesday is the new finish date...

Thanks for the update Stuart, very interesting......but wouldn't want the bill for that job....but as a one off would like to actually do the repair only for the experience and see what the job involves - I can just imagine them boys who do this job day in, day out pi$$ing themselves with laughter at this....oh well

So, out of interest (from someone who only works on Ag. machinery) when you rebuild the u/c do you loctite the bolts or just do the F.T. (torqued - of course)

Why have you tacked up the front & back lower roller groups?

Whats the ball-park man-hours for this job and do you charge the customer only the Cat scheduled hours or what time it really took?

Looks like there's abit of a special tool sat in there on top the idler, I guess its to ensure correct alignment.

Right O Richard,

try to answer your points:

The bolts are all covered in anti seize or copper slip, sprocket bolts are torqued to a Ib foot setting then turned 120 degrees, you only use these nuts and bolts once, the turn stretches the bolt and puts the correct clamping force on the joint,

The front and rear bogies were tacked up in error, got to get in and check shim the rubber bump stops on the bogie suspension

80 hours would be around teh norm, 2 men, 4 days in a hurry.

The tooling on the idler is actually an idler guard to stop debris falling down the back and causing wear

think thats it covered!

Got the first front track frame out to change the seal.

Yes, its fascinating stuff when you get in to the nuts & bolts of all this kind of repair....let alone the scale & size of the parts.

The D10 is now sat back on the deck shod with a new set of tracks, blade is back from the welders after being skinned, just need to paint the back of the blade black and get it fitted to the tractor. . . . . .

The master shoe is clipped on the edges to reduce stress going through the joint.

HID lighting has now been fitted apart from one facing rearwards, awaiting a bracket from Singapore (did offer to go and get it myself.......) The hood, top of the rad and blade rams painted semi gloss black to reduce glare off the lights.

All being well should be rolling out the yard on Wednesday......
