BTD6 rebuilt in Australia First post

Post #1 by Stageone » Sun Jun 21, 2015 11:10 pm

Hello
I am very new to the forum and thought I'd introduce myself. I have become a keen restorer of this late BTD6 after a lot of heart break and chasing parts from around the globe. It started off as a basket case with blown finals and destroyed gearbox, and has been a 2 year mission to rebuild it from an empty gear case. Second hand inter undercarriage parts are just to rare and expensive over here in Australia, in the end I decided it would be better financially and for long term use to convert all the undercarriage to Cat D3. There are also a few other modifications to the finals that I hope extend their life a bit, they now take 8 litres of oil aside and have breathers. All the bonnet and engine covers are now 5mm plate. I know it's not an original but there was very little of the machine to work with when I started and finding good condition parts was near impossible. I hope to put this machine to work in the very near future.

Cheers
Scott

Thanks Paul
I have tried Brandon's, I think I have dealt with just about every old Inter parts dealer in Australia, with often frustrating results!! I might try them again because I wouldn't mind a spare set of the late model "yellow" conical style final drive housings. I bought a btd8 wreck the other day hoping to get these parts but only after it arrived I found out it had the planetary finals.

nice job there and good to see Inters being restored even though getting parts is very difficult and finals are prone to failure. Some come up cheap here in Tassie from time to time but usually the finals are no good and the machine is trashed to death.

Interesting use of D3 gear - something I did with a D2 - but then found it hard to get early style D3 chains at a reasonable price. Just can't win:)
