Hi Paul,

Don't know the year, it says Hesston 605 CSM. Would you know if the starter has 3 mounting bolts? Diesel.

Mate looks like what we call a 605 C I think Hesston was a US branch of the same company the heston part supplied headers (combines to most people not from Australia) hay balers mowers ect in Australia were sold as Fait Hesston , so I feel in Hesston parts of the world they proberly sold the Fiat stuff as Hesston Fiat or some such thing
Now what seems to be the problem ????
Just lay down on the couch and tell us all about it

Thanks again, I was hoping someone from OZ would chime in, these are supposed to be very popular down under. Just got it, engine turns over OK by hand but very slow with starter. Tried hooking a battery direct to starter, no help. So I went to pull the starter, got two bolts loose, top inside and top outside but it's not budging. I think there is a third bolt underneath but there is a roll cage mount in the way, a big sucker with many bolts that looks like part of the main frame but I guess it is not. Can't even see the starter bolt but I can almost feel it with my finger. Hard to believe I have to remove that thing huge mount to get the starter out.

are you sure it's the starter as the battery in these are huge and it needs to be in fairly good nic to get it swinging they are good starting motors down here even in the cold that we have in Australia

I'm about 50 miles north of San Francisco Ca.. Been to OZ once, loved it.

I've tried 3 batteries, all of which start my 8 liter Dodge truck (the one in the photo). Two of them are huge heavy tractor batteries. But yes I have wondered. I will try it again maybe jumpered to the truck running and with different cables. It does turn over very slowly, like a low battery.

But it would be nice to be able to take the starter out...

Make sure you've got a good earth. Either clean the starter where it mounts in or run a separate earth connection.

Like Brian says make sure you have a good earth the fact that it turns over but just slowly would tell me that there is more than likely a crook connection some were make sure the lugs are attached well to the cables and are not frayed
The battery for Fiat tractors wheeled or tracked reaches right across the bonnet between the head lights it takes up all the room in there !!!!

I have had the starter off my 550 Fiat tractor once to grease the pinion and I do seem to remember a bolt was hard to get out I will get some pictures if it is of any help

Thanks Brian and Paul. Can't mess with it today but will again tomorrow.

I pulled the fuel injectors out btw. Should that relieve compression and help it turn over? The holes under the injectors are very small, maybe 1/16". I poured some Marvel Mystery Oil in the openings but it never seem to go down into the cylinders. Is that also where I would do a compression check?

Also I have the gear shift in neutral (slides left and right). Is that all that needs to be done to spin it over for starting? No hydraulics to neutralize or anything like that?

Paul
