Thanks guys. I'm back home now but I'll snap some shots or a video next time I'm out at the plot. Mean time I'm going to change the final drive oil. The maintenance manual Fiat 505c graciously uploaded says it calls for Fiat Ambra 20 W-40 oil. What the heck is that? Motor oil, hydraulic oil, gear oil? Can I sub something? Also, there is something called 'belt pulley oil', is there a reservoir for oiling the pulleys? Where? Now that I have this baby fully functional I am going to take good care of it!

Paul that first one would be gear oil any brand oil with the same weight and viscosity should work ok I would think

as for the belt pulley it would have been an option that bolts on to the PTO shift so I doubt the machine would have one

Yes probably just use gear lube but we have 90w not 20-40. The repair manual goes a little further, giving the "international Designation" as "SAE 20 W-40 Multi-detergent oil to MIL-L- 2104 B containing EP additives". This is a defunct military spec which best I can tell was replaced by API-CC rating, whatever that is. All a little confusing because the first part sounds like motor oil but the EP sounds like gear oil. Obviously gear oil is what ought to be used, and I'm not trying overthink it, just don't want to take any chances of taking it apart for some crazy reason. I'm not aware of any gear lube in 20-40.

I have a 605c, it has 3 bolts on the starter. My starter was not turning the motor over easily either, and I too thought the battery was kaput. I removed the starter and took it to the local auto electrician, he said it would be full of gunk as the starter is located right under the fuel filters. Over time he said the starter seems to get a lot of dust and diesel in it. This has a big effect on the workings of the starter. Cleaned it out and have not had another problem. Also did not need to replace the battery.

Thanks Zekajack. Yeah I would pull my starter in a heartbeat if I could get to that third bold without removing the roll cage. As it is I have two large batteries and sometimes a jump also to start it cold. Once hot it will start on the two batteries fairly easily.

I went to adjust the tracks for the first time today. Took the cover off and the nuts take about a 2" wrench! Anybody know the size exactly? Corroded too, looks like it's going to take some heat to loosen those babies!

Filmed me going down the hill. Nothing much to see, just a lot of banging around and a beat up looking machine. But no smoke! Don't watch unless you are bored.

Nice video.
Thought you all might get a kick out of this.

I would love to get my hands on the documentation (if they have indeed reproduced the operators and maintenance manual in high resolution.
