now thats a thought different uses in Australia for different gear box set ups we can only guess what the reasons were for these different changes these days if we could jump in a time machine and head on back we would never have to guess the problem would be we would get done for over loading on the way back to today :D :D :D

Do you have any picture so of your machine you can share ??

Paul

Im up at Ayr in north QLD

I'll try and get some pic's for you, but might take a couple of weeks as i'll be away for a week.
it's not much to look at, but it goes.

I've got a spare parts manual and it shows the parts that are common between the 3 & 4 challengers, and it says that they had the same bevel gear, which is the bull gears. The parts manual might be before the planetary gears, but it dosn't show the reduction box either. can't figure it out.

They were a very versatile dozer, buckets, blades, winches, rippers, and of cause the draw bar. pivoting suspension, the later ones had the leyland 680. easy to work on, They are quite a good dozer, should have sold more, but i guess there was too much competition at the time.
The only thing i don't like about them is the fact they don't have a low range, when i get to steeper country, i have to work it very hard.
That bucket makes the dozer look a bit heavy at the front, it's nearly as big as the rest of it.

G'day guys.....Just found this thread and thought to share here also. We are farmers from the Gilgandra NSW area and we have 2 Challenger 3 dozers and a Challenger 4. Currently only one Challenger 3 is operational.
I also know of 3 other Challenger 3 dozers in our area.
Some years back we travelled down to Uptons at Corowa NSW and purchased what was left of the parts supply they had and so we do have a very limited supply of some parts for these machines.

Very interesting thread :brravo:

Welcome Lex, I didn't know there are so many challenger 3's around, specially in one area.
Do you plan to get the other 2 going or are they for spares. Have you found them to be very reliable.
Does yours have a reduction box, mine don't, so when i go in reverse it feels like i'm doing 100mph, not nice when you are going over large rocks.
Hey Paul, do you have any old machines, i looked up your area, it looks very flat.
