Prototype Caterpillar pictures ( does anyone have any).

Post #1 by CBR954 » Tue Apr 29, 2008 1:38 am

Does anyone have any interesting prototype Caterpillar tractor pictures to share on here?
I am looking for a specific picture of a prototype high drive tractor which was built around a D9G/H chassis. I saw it in a book about Caterpillar but cant remember which one.It may be a long shot but if anyone has it and can post it here i would be grateful.
Any other prototype pictures would be great such as the fore runners to the rear engine hydrostatic loaders 943-973 or even mono boom wheel loaders.
I must be mad to be posting at this time!! :insomnia:

Thanks all for taking the time to reply.
SRB thats the machine i remember seeing.
The loader looks like it was based on a 980B or 988A.
I find stuff like this more interesting than new or recent machine photographs as they were unlikly to have been seen except by the chosen few.
Any more??

Hi, CBR954.
There is also a photo of that same converted D9G in Eric C. Orlemann's Caterpillar Chronicle, but viewed from the left side.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I wonder if that dozer pictured above still survives.
I also wonder if it worked OK?
That blade is very close to the nose of the tractor.

Hi, JimInOz.
Yes, that blade does appear close to the tractor - by normal standards of the D9D-E-G-H. How-wevver, I suspect that they would have converted the blade from sway braces to tag link location, as is fitted to most of the bigger high-sprocket drive dozers. That would have allowed them to get the blade a fair bit closer to the tractor.

Just my 0.02.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
