Hello

I have a JCB 801.4 (1995) that won't start. i have had the fuel pump reconditioned, new fuel filters and given fuel lines a blow with the compressor but still no joy. before it stopped it was having problems starting/won't run right/stalled when too much load on the engine. could something be stuck or the timing off ? or is the engine just knackered? i have had the head of the engine and nothing looks damaged but im no expert. any help would be great.

James

Hi

I've just acquired one of these, to get it started you need to ensure

1) Glow plugs fitted and operational (stick a voltmeter on it and check you have 12 V at the plug - if not change the glow plug.

2) No air in fuel system ( Google Perkins 103-10 engine manual and find instructions on purging the fuel lines of air)

Basically you need to operate the lift pump by hand and open the bolt on the top of the fuel filter till you see diesel, then close it.

Next step is to open the unions on the injector pipes just a little, then operate the starter till you see clean air free diesel, then close the unions.

You should then be able to get it started.

Let me know how you get on

I have just bought a digger, but the engine overheats after just a few mins , even on tickover, the fan belt is quite slack, could this cause my problem?

adjust the belt first, plenty of coolant in it?? what is the outside of the radiator like is it full of dust, leaves etc not causing a good airflow over it.is there an oil cooler in front of it possibly blocking air flow too? what size or kind of digger is it?

many thanks Gerard, new fan belt fitted then ran on tickover for 30 mins without boiling, hopefully this will continue when I use it.
Rad was filled up and clear of dust, so Im guessing it was just the wrong fan belt someone had fitted before I bought it.
Its a JCB 801.4 (95). Now having trouoble with getting key to make contact with starter, but have a new ignition switch on order, which I hope will solve that problem, all thats left is to learn how to operate the beast.
Thanks again
Pete
