Mounting expanding axles to reduce loose fit

Post #1 by Robban_C » Sat Oct 20, 2007 10:15 pm

I´ve had some rattle in the bucket lately so I decided to replace the pins with expanding pins.
The pictures and the text will tell the rest.

I dont think there is any oil getting through that pipeline on the bottom left! ;-)

 Ha ha Yes, I kind of thought that myself!! Looks as if that pipe is in a very vunerable place :dizzy: Likely to get damaged very easily :?:

Nice work though Robban...You are obviously a very multi talented man ;)

It´s nice with a machine so small that you cant put the parts on an oil barrel.

The tilting head also had a loose fit so I decided to change som bushings and the pin in the cylinder rod end.

Holger, those hydraulic lines are actually working! They are to the lower hydraulic quick fit. The one in the tilting head. But the hydraulic cylinder in the quick fit moves slightly slower than it should do because the tubing is so tight. The only reason that it runs is that the cylinder are so small so the required oil volume isn´t that big.

Oh yes. I have already changed one of those pipes once.
And I plan to protect those pipes better and make new ones.

And if you say I´m multi talented (thanks!) you should know that I made the hydraulics in the quick fit myself (Yeah, and that design that causes flat pipes). Both upper and lower quick fits are controlled from the same hydraulic circuit (but of course not at the same time).

Yes, I´ve done that! Several times per day the first days but thanks anyway!
And in case anyone else plans to do this, retightening is definitely needed and it´s needed even after the first hour. I suggest that you start with some light work the first hour and then start retightening the bolts.

You obviously didn´t tightened it hard enough the first time!! :D There are tightening guidelines in the mounting instructions but we uses to tighten as hard we can and that´s usually it! Take a 3/4" shaft and a pipe on that to get some force! :-)

I tightened according to the instructions. Or actually like this:
Correct torque is 385 Nm. I don´t have a torque wrench for such high torques so I used a wrench slightly longer than half a meter and hung myself on. With a ready-to-run weight of about 75 kg (including wallet! ) that should be it.
I didn´t want to over tighten it. But I did it on the smaller axle on the tilting head. I didn´t note that those nuts (same thread!) should be tightened with only 250 Nm so I used the same method on those and they didn´t need that much retightening.

Thats precisely what i meant! Overtighten them from the beginning and you doesnt have to retighten as often as if you followed the guidelines! 75 Kg inclusive wallet? Man that must be a thin wallet since i remembers from your pics you are a viking! Myself weighs in around 95 Kg and thats 20 Kg less then i was sporting, no body building just bicycle, Floorball and American football.
