hydrovane 90D

Post #1 by rachel » Wed Jun 08, 2011 1:44 pm

Hi Guys,
not sure if I have put this in the right section but here goes,
I have a hydrovane 90D road compressor, although it runs and produces air, it is in need of a complete service, and I want to give it a total restoration.
is it possible to get complete service kits for the compressor side (Felts etc) and am I right in thinking do you need the odd special tool to dismantle it, if so can they be fabricated.
It has a perkins 4108 driving it and there is a small leak on the cooling side, water is getting in to the oil sump!! , could this be the head gasket, as the water level only seems to go down to the level of the head, if the oil is drained off and refilled it will start and run fine, so I am assuming that it must be a breach on the gasket across a water and oil vane.
any advice would be welcomed, and thanks in advance

regards rachel

Hi Rachel and welcome to the forum  to answer your questions; yes and yes again. There should be a service kit available the best place to try first would be to simply use Yell.com for your local area and see who the compressor specialists are if not then a wider search will be needed, I have a local contact in the West Midlands that may be able to help you if not.

As for your engine problem then it does sound like a head gasket problem if you have the tools just whip the head off and have a look to see if there is a positive tracking line across the gasket from one of the cylinders to the water jacket.
Hope this helps.

Jeremy has given you good advice. There are kits on Ebay under Hydrovane. The air end is CWD 66 I think.Mine was built in 1970,given a overhaul a few year back and had done 250 hours work. The Perkins 4.108 is a nice easy engine to work on.Hopefully a new gasket will do,but when you remove the head.Check for flatness with a straight edge. One thing with a Perkins, the oil gets dirty quickly.
If you need details on oils etc I have a service book to refer to.
Good luck
Martyn

try Air Technique on ebay

thanks for the replies, I've had the head off and put a new gasket in, there were no signs to show that it was the gasket that is the problem.
I put the battery back on ad turned her over, it made all the right noises and turned over ok so I think I got the head put back right :claphands: ...BUT....not got the rad back on yet so I carn't run her up properly, will let you know how it goes.

thanks again,

rachel

You need to change the separators,I think kits are available on E bay,the air end is a 66 for a 90 D so quote that number.Make sure the oil is of the correct grade around SAE 30 rotella.Hydraulic oil is no good.It takes 5 ltrs, the correct oil is also on E Bay.
