Hi Guys
I worked at the John Howard Strood site from approx 1977 to 1981. Howard Plant employed me (a subsidiary of John Howard.) I was the company’s automotive electrician, spending most of my time around SE England at various John Howard sites. These included the Thames barrier at Woolwich, plus smaller barriers to estuary creeks. During construction the barrier was referred to as “crane city”. Clearly remember the vast number of crane jibs, with operators communicating with divers in the Thames. Also worked on London high rise building (IBM maybe), motorways, drag lines on Romney Marshes, barges at Strood. Equipment was prepaired, overhauled and repaired at the Strood site, cranes, welders, compressors, draglines, generators, pumps barges etc. Dave Buckley was a mechanic, Gordon ??? a welder and Jim Truelove the foreman at the workshop. All very good people and good times. The canteen sold the best bacon and eggs and great hot cakes/buns, soo good on the cold early starts. I recall that the concrete floor of the workshop sank a good metre into the soil that it was built upon, a marsh. All in all a great place to work as a young automotive electrician (21 yrs old).

My wife and I migrated to Australia in 1981. In two weeks (June 2013) time we are returning to the Medway towns as part of a holiday and will revisit the area.

Kindest regards

Jim (Tony) Williams

Hi there, just did a google search for this company and found this thread.

My great grandfather was sir John Howard of John Howard and co ltd and I'm named after him... and my grandfather, john anthony. I'm 18.

Just looking to find out a bit about them and what they did really, if anyone who can recall either of them or the company could get in touch that'd be grand!

I know they were involved in the severn bridge, fourth road bridge and humber, but that's it really

Cheers
John toby
