Re: Classic pictures Update 19/09/2017
....Could be they used a additional axle..?... Interesting - yes it is quite possible, but depends how it fitted - the one shown below (only pic I can find) has the extra axle set further back, but the one in your York advert pics show it quite close to the tractor's axle, just like the recovery pi...

Fred, that's a Constructor or Junior Constructor you have there. I didn't know about this Ryan example, but Siddle C Cook of Consett ran one of these with a demountable ballast body which was also sometimes used as a 5th wheel tractor unit. That first one, Steve - I've never seen a 6 x 4 Highwayman-type before! A rare truck.
Can you tell from the original who the operator was?
In fact if you have a better resolution image, any chance of getting a copy?
Tony
Edit: No problem - managed to enlarge it. Looks like a tag axle?

The Matador / drawbar trailer was one used by the Airfield Construction Branch of the RAF. They also used Scammell Constructors with a huge steel ballast body (floor was 1 1/2" thick plate!) to pull Crane / Dyson drawbar trailers. Occasionally a Drott was carried in the body of the Scammell. On...

That was snapped in the Market Harborough yard of Geoff Rhodes, the Scammell Constructor alongside earning its keep righting drunk tippers and pulling skip lorries and tippers out of local ditches.
