It looks like there is a crack propagating down the shaft. If the break was right at the end where, presumably the 'piston' is welded onto the shaft ? maybe there was a weakness in the weld which finally gave way under extreme load conditions.

Hi Jon, whilst I don't have one myself, you might try Fenland Tractors near Spalding (01406 330386, talk to Martyn or Justyn) they have quite a few ccus in their yard.
